Getting started

  1. Battery Open the battery cover with a coin, insert a 3 V CR123A or DL123A lithium battery the right way round and close it firmly. When the battery symbol lights up on the LCD panel, replace it soon. When it blinks, the camera no longer works.
  2. Loading Away from bright light, push the back release button down. Slide the cartridge in at an angle, bottom end first, and pull the film leader to the I+FILM mark. Close the back: the film advances to frame 1 by itself, otherwise load it again.
  3. Getting started Press the main switch: the lens extends and the camera is ready. Turn the dioptre adjustment dial until the focus frame looks sharp. Left unused for about 2 minutes, it retracts the lens and switches off.
  4. Your first photo Frame with the zoom button, W for wide-angle, T for telephoto. Aim the focus frame at the subject and press halfway: the green LED lights up when it’s in focus, then press all the way. If it blinks, the subject isn’t in focus or the flash is charging.
  5. Rewinding After the last frame, the film rewinds by itself and the frame counter counts down. Open the back when the counter blinks at 0. To take out a partly used roll, press the manual rewind button.

What it can do

  • Six flash modes, cycled with the flash button: auto (the setting at power-on), red-eye reduction, flash off, night portrait, flash on and landscape.
  • Landscape mode focuses at infinity, with no flash. Night portrait exposes for up to 1 s: hold the camera with both hands or put it on a tripod.
  • Spot focus: with the camera off, hold the switch down for about 2 s, until you see (S) on the display. It is cancelled when you switch off.
  • Panorama format: push the mask lever, under the camera, to P. The image is 13 × 36 mm on the film. Stay at least 1.7 m from the subject.
  • 10 s self-timer. It also works with the R-4 infrared remote control: the picture is taken 2 s after you press, from up to 4 m in front of the camera.

The flash

  • At wide-angle, it reaches from 0.5 to 3 m with ISO 100 film, up to 6 m with ISO 400. It recharges in about 2 to 10 s.
  • In red-eye reduction mode, it fires two flashes: don’t move before the second one, the picture is taken with it.
  • In low light, a brief flash may fire at half-press to help focusing: that’s not the picture yet.

Good to know

  • It focuses from 50 cm at wide-angle. Under 1.7 m, frame within the close-up frame in the viewfinder: the viewfinder doesn’t see quite what the lens sees.
  • For an off-centre subject, press halfway while aiming at it, reframe without letting go, then press all the way.
  • Film speed is set automatically with DX-coded film from ISO 50 to 3200. A film without a DX code is treated as ISO 100.
  • On the version with a date back, reset the date and time after each battery change.
  • In the cold, the battery weakens: keep the camera warm under your jacket. Remove the battery if you won’t be using it for a long time.
