Battery Slide the cover marked BATT, on the back, downwards to open it. Insert a 3 V CR123A or DL123A lithium battery following the + and − signs in the compartment, then slide the cover back up until it clicks. When you turn it on, a faint or blank display, or a blinking battery symbol, means it needs a new battery.
Sensitivity Nothing to set with DX-coded film: it sets itself to ISO 50, 100, 200, 400, 800 or 1600. An intermediate value is brought down to the next step below in this list, and film without DX coding is treated as ISO 100.
Loading Out of direct sunlight, slide the latch on the side and open the back. Drop in the cartridge, pull the film leader to the FILM TIP mark, hold the film flat with your finger and close the back until it clicks: the film winds on by itself. Turn on: the counter should show 1. If E blinks, load the film again.
Your first photo Press ON/OFF: the lens extends to 38 mm. Frame with the W/T button under the shutter button, place the autofocus target at the centre of the viewfinder on the subject and press halfway: the red lamp, next to the eyepiece, lights up briefly when the image is sharp. Then press all the way, smoothly.
Rewinding After the last frame, it rewinds by itself and the counter counts down. Only open the back when E blinks, then take out the cartridge. For a part-used roll, press the small button next to the shutter button with the tip of a propelling pencil: the rewind goes all the way by itself.
What it can do
A 38-110 mm zoom on the W/T button: W for a landscape or a group, T for a distant subject. Left unused for a minute at the T position, the lens returns to 38 mm by itself. The lens cover closes briefly when you go from T to W: it isn’t a fault.
Focus lock: aim at the subject with the centre target, press halfway, reframe without letting go, then press all the way without changing distance. The manual recommends it for a subject that’s too small, black hair, a shot through glass, shiny car bodywork, a flame or fireworks, or an object placed in front of the subject.
A landscape mode (▲ symbol), on the flash button on top: for sharper distant scenes or a shot through glass. The flash is switched off automatically in this mode.
A 10 s self-timer: press the eye/self-timer button until the self-timer symbol shows, put the camera on a tripod and press the shutter button. The front lamp blinks, then the photo is taken. It cancels after one shot or when the camera is turned off, and doesn’t fire while the flash is charging.
A dioptre adjuster from −1.3 to +0.8: with your eye to the viewfinder, slide its small lever until the image is at its sharpest, without poking your eye with your fingertip.
The flash
When you turn it on, it’s in automatic (AUTO): the flash fires by itself when light is low. The flash button, on top, cycles through: automatic, landscape, flash off, forced flash, slow sync (AUTO SLOW).
At half-press, the red lamp near the eyepiece lights up: you can shoot. If it blinks, the flash is charging and the shutter button stays locked. Charging takes about 8 s.
Range with colour negative film: 0.86 to 6.5 m at 38 mm and 0.86 to 2.4 m at 110 mm at ISO 100. 0.86 to 13.1 m and 0.86 to 4.8 m at ISO 400. With slide film, allow about two thirds at the 110 mm end.
Forced flash for a backlit or shaded face. Flash off for a sunset, a night scene or a place where flash is not allowed. Slow sync to keep the atmosphere of the background behind a person. In these last two modes, the shutter speed drops: put the camera on a tripod.
Against red-eye, press the eye/self-timer button until the eye symbol shows: a lamp lights up 1 s before the flash; keep the camera still, and your subject too, until the shot is taken. No effect with flash off or in landscape mode.
Good to know
Focus from 0.86 m to infinity (0.93 m with flash off). Any closer, the shutter button locks without any signal. Between about 1 m and 0.86 m, frame with the close-up marks in the viewfinder.
Turn it off with ON/OFF after use: when it’s on, an accidental press on the shutter button drains the battery.
If the battery dies during a rewind, change it, then press the rewind button twice: it carries on.
Below 0 °C, the battery weakens for a while: keep the camera warm in a pocket. It recovers at room temperature.
If it’s going to sit unused for a long time, take out the battery and fire the flash about once a month: this looks after its capacitor.
