Getting started

  1. Batteries Pull the battery cover, under the body, in the direction of the arrow. Fit two 1.5 V AA alkaline batteries (LR6) following the + and − signs in the compartment, then push the cover back until it clicks. NiCd rechargeables aren’t suitable.
  2. Sensitivity Nothing to set: it reads the DX code on the cartridge. It’s designed for ISO 100 or 400 DX film. ISO 200 DX film, or film without a DX code, is treated as ISO 100.
  3. Loading Push the back latch in the direction of the arrow to open it. Put in the cartridge, with the hole underneath on the rewind fork, pull the film leader to the mark and check that the film lies flat between the guides. Close the back: the film advances by itself and the counter should show “1”, otherwise start again.
  4. Your first photo Slide the switch in the direction of the arrow: it opens the lens cover, and the camera only fires with the cover fully open. Hold it with both hands without covering the flash, the autofocus windows or the lens, and centre the subject in the viewfinder, at least 1 m away. Press halfway to focus, then all the way.
  5. Rewinding To rewind a partly used roll, it has a dedicated lever under the body, next to the battery cover. Pages 10 and 11 of the manual are missing from the butkus.org scan: rewinding isn’t described there.

What it can do

  • Focus lock: centre the subject, press halfway, reframe without letting go, then press all the way. Release the shutter button to cancel it.
  • The manual recommends this lock for subjects that are too small, behind glass, dark and non-reflective, shiny like car bodywork or water, or without a clear outline like a flame or fireworks.
  • On the AF240SV QD (Quartz Date) version only: a 10 s self-timer, whose lamp stays lit for 7 s, then blinks for 3 s. Pressing its button again, or switching the camera off, cancels it.
  • On the QD version only: date or time imprinting in orange, near the bottom right corner of the picture, with five modes including “no imprint” on the MODE button. It is hard to read on a light or orange background.

The flash

  • By default, it fires by itself when there isn’t enough light. Range: 1 to 2.7 m at ISO 100, 1 to 3.8 m at ISO 200, 1 to 5.4 m at ISO 400.
  • The green lamp, next to the eyepiece, lights up when the flash is charged and goes out after about 20 s. A half-press turns it back on. It blinks while charging, and the shutter button stays locked. Recharging takes about 6 s: if it takes longer, replace the batteries.
  • Two buttons on the front, under the flash: one turns the flash off to keep the natural light, the other forces it on, for example against the light.
  • To prevent red-eye, a lamp lights up when you press halfway. Hold the shutter button halfway for a few seconds before pressing all the way. The lamp goes out by itself after 10 s.

Good to know

  • It switches itself off after about 20 s of non-use. Press halfway or set the switch back to on to turn it on again.
  • Close the lens cover when you’re not using it: you avoid firing by accident and draining the batteries.
  • A window in the back shows whether a cartridge is loaded.
  • Take the batteries out if it will go unused for a long time. Store it somewhere cool, dry and dust-free, away from camphor, mothballs and the heat of a radiator or a car in summer.
