Getting started

  1. Batteries Slide the battery cover lever in the direction of the arrow, open the cover and insert two 1.5 V AA alkaline batteries (LR6) the way marked on the back of the lid. NiCd rechargeables and 3 V lithium batteries can’t be used. To check, set the switch to ON and press the shutter button lightly: the viewfinder lamp should light up for one second.
  2. Loading Out of direct sunlight, open the back by sliding its catch down and drop in the cartridge, with the bottom hole engaged on the rewind fork. Pull the film leader to the ▽ mark, taut between the film guide rails. Close the back: the film winds on by itself to frame 1, and if the counter doesn’t get there, the film is wrongly loaded.
  3. Sensitivity It reads the cartridge’s DX code by itself, from ISO 100 to 1000, and Nikon recommends ISO 400. Films of ISO 100, 200, 400 and 1000 are set as they are, others to the nearest value (an ISO 125 goes to 100, an 800 to 1000). Film without a DX code is taken as ISO 100.
  4. Your first photo Push the switch to ON, the lens barrier opens. Place the viewfinder focus marks on the subject, at least 65 cm away, and press lightly: the viewfinder lamp lights up for one second and the shutter button LED blinks when you can shoot. Press all the way, the flash fires by itself if light is low and the film moves on to the next frame.
  5. Rewinding At the end of the roll, it rewinds by itself and stops by itself: wait until the counter returns to the white zone marked S, then open the back and take out the cartridge. To rewind before the end, press the rewind button mid-roll. To turn it off, move the switch back to OFF, the lens barrier closes.

What it can do

  • To do without the flash, keep your finger on the flash cancel button while you press lightly then all the way: the shutter button LED then doesn’t blink.
  • Forced flash (Anytime Flash button) fires whenever you want. In low light, it lets the shutter speed drop to about 1/8 s instead of 1/30 s, to render the background better: put the camera on a tripod.
  • Against red-eye, push the switch to the pre-flash position. Three weak flashes come before the main flash: hold the camera still and ask your subject not to move.
  • To be in the photo, aim at the subject nearest to where you will stand, keep the focus lock button pressed and press the shutter button lightly. The LED blinks and focus stays memorised for about 30 s: the person you hand the camera to presses all the way during that time.
  • Self-timer: aim, then press its button. Focus is locked and the photo is taken 10 s later, with the LED blinking for the last 3 seconds. Keep the button pressed until the LED blinks and it takes two shots, the second about 5 s after the first.

Good to know

  • For a subject outside the marks, aim at it, press lightly, reframe without lifting your finger, then press all the way. Do the same by aiming at another object at the same distance if the subject is too small, behind glass, shiny (mirror, water) or very bright.
  • Flash range: 0.65 to 3.5 m at ISO 100, 5 m at ISO 200, 7.5 m at ISO 400 and 1000. If the viewfinder lamp blinks, the shutter button stays locked: let go and wait a few seconds for the flash to charge.
  • For slides, use DX-coded film of ISO 100, 200, 400 or 1000: with other films, the exposure may be off.
  • Turn it off after use and don’t store it switched on in its bag: the shutter button gets pressed in there and drains the batteries. Take them out if it goes unused for a long time, and always change both together, new and of the same brand.
  • The leaflet also covers the W35 Quartz Date, which prints the date on the photo: its back has a small display, three buttons (MODE, SELECT, ADJUST) and its own CR2025 lithium battery. A W35 AF with a plain back has no date function, and that part of the manual doesn’t apply to it.

Care

  • Don’t leave it somewhere very hot, store it in a cool, dry place.
  • Clean the lens and the autofocus window with a soft, clean cloth. After rain, mist or the seaside, wipe it gently: salt, moisture and dust damage it.
  • In severe cold, batteries weaken: put in new batteries and keep the camera warm. A sudden move from cold to warm creates condensation inside.
