Getting started
Charging The D-Li63 battery charges outside the camera, in the D-BC63 charger, PENTAX logo facing up. The lamp stays red while charging and goes out when it’s done: 120 minutes at most, between 0 and 40 °C.
Battery Slide the battery/card cover: it opens by itself. Push the lock lever aside with the side of the battery and slide the battery in, PENTAX logo facing the lens, until it locks. Slide the cover to close it.
Card Slide an SD or SDHC card into the same compartment, label facing the lens, until it clicks. Without a card, it records to its built-in memory of about 21.9 MB.
Switching on for the first time Choose the language with the navigation button and confirm with OK, then your home city and daylight saving time, and finally the date and time.
Your first photo Press the power switch. Frame with the zoom control and press halfway: the focus frame turns green once focus is set, red if not. Press all the way to take the picture.
What it can do
Auto mode, the factory setting, picks the shooting mode itself to suit the scene. The green button switches to Green mode, where the camera sets everything.
Digital SR mode (anti-blur) raises the sensitivity up to ISO 3200 to limit blur in low light.
Video in 640 × 480 or 320 × 240, at 30 or 15 frames per second, with mono sound, up to 4 GB per clip.
A 10 s or 2 s self-timer, and burst shooting.
Face recognition for autofocus, in Portrait mode.
The flash
Five modes: auto, off, on, auto with red-eye reduction, on with red-eye reduction.
Range with auto sensitivity: 0.4 to 5.5 m at wide angle, 0.6 to 2.8 m at telephoto.
Slow sync is only available in Night Scene mode.
Good to know
With a blue sky, a white wall, a moving subject or tight patterns, the autofocus struggles: focus at half-press on an object at the same distance, reframe without letting go, then press all the way.
Don’t remove the card or switch the camera off while recording, playing back or connected by USB: you could lose data.
Straight after use, the card can be very hot: take it out carefully.
The D-BC63 charger only charges D-Li63 batteries. A battery that runs flat soon after charging is reaching the end of its life.
