Getting started

Batteries It takes a CR-V3 lithium battery, or two AA batteries: lithium, Ni-MH or alkaline. Slide the cover, open it, insert the batteries following the + and − marks, close it and push to lock.
Charging Only Ni-MH batteries are rechargeable, and the D-AC5 AC adapter does not charge them in the camera. A CR-V3 gives about 650 shots, alkalines 70: Pentax only recommends them as a stopgap.
Card It records to a Type I CompactFlash card. With the camera off, open the CF cover and push the card in, label facing the lens. To remove it, press the eject button. If a card has been used elsewhere, format it.
Switching on for the first time When you first switch it on, choose the language (English is on the list), your city, daylight saving time and video output, then the date and time. If the date is lost after a long time without batteries, set it again.
Your first photo Switch on, frame on the screen and zoom with the zoom button. Press halfway: the frame turns green when the subject is sharp. Press fully. The red lamp blinks while the image is recorded.

Pull the screen upwards: it turns through 180° both horizontally and vertically. Turned towards you, it shows a mirror image.
For a self-portrait, choose Self-portrait in Picture mode, turn the screen round and shoot. In low light, rest the camera on something and use the self-timer.
To put it away, fold the screen back against the body, PENTAX logo facing out. Never force the hinge.
In bright sunlight, fit the screen hood designed by Pentax, after first folding the screen back into its stowed position.

320 × 240 videos, 30 seconds at most per clip, without sound.
A Night Scene mode: the shot takes almost twice as long, to remove noise. Put the camera on a tripod.
