Battery Slide the battery/card cover and open it. Slide in the D-LI8 battery, mark facing the screen, pushing the latch aside with its edge. To take it out, push the latch with your finger in the same direction.
Charging The battery charges outside the camera, in the D-BC8 charger: red lamp while charging, green when done. Allow about 100 minutes, between 0 and 40 °C. This charger only charges D-LI8 batteries.
Card With the camera off, slide an SD or SDHC card into the same compartment, label facing the screen, until it clicks. Without a card, it records to its internal memory of about 23 MB. If a card has been used elsewhere, format it in the camera.
Switching on for the first time Press the power switch: the lamp turns green and the lens extends. The first time you switch on, choose the language (English is offered), your city and daylight saving time, then the date and time.
Your first photo Press the green button: it switches to Green mode, fully automatic. Press halfway, the frame turns green when the subject is sharp, then press fully. Press the green button again to get your settings back.
What it can do
A Movie mode in the mode palette: 640 × 480 at about 30 frames per second, with sound. While filming, the optical zoom is locked. Digital zoom only works if movie shake reduction is switched off.
Anti-blur mode raises the sensitivity on its own, up to ISO 1600, to limit camera shake in low light. The image size is then fixed at 4 MP.
A Voice Recording mode: about 4 hr 19 min on a 256 MB card.
Good to know
Left without a battery for a long time, it forgets the date: set it again when you next switch on.
In cold weather, the battery weakens. Keep it warm in a pocket: it gets its strength back at room temperature.
Don't remove the card or switch off while recording or transferring to a computer: you could lose data.
It switches itself off after 3 or 5 minutes of inactivity, or never: that's the Auto Power Off setting in the Setting menu.
