Getting started

  1. Batteries With the main switch on OFF, slide the battery cover with your fingertip, not your fingernail. Insert 2 AA (R6) batteries the way marked on the bottom of the camera, or 1 CR-V3 lithium battery, then close by pressing and sliding the cover. Zinc-carbon batteries don’t work, and the CR-V3 isn’t rechargeable.
  2. Card Still on OFF, open the card compartment and push in an xD-Picture Card straight, the right way round, until it clicks. To take it out, push it all the way in, then hold it back: it pops out suddenly if you let go too fast.
  3. Switching on for the first time Slide the main switch to the camera icon while holding down the lock button: the lens extends and the screen comes on. For the language, press OK/Menu, go to MODE MENU, SETUP tab, language line, choose it and confirm.
  4. Date and time In the same SETUP tab, choose the date line and the display order, then set the year, month, day and time with the arrows. The clock runs on the 24-hour format and starts when you confirm. Without batteries for about 3 days, the date and time go back to factory values.
  5. Your first photo It starts in PROGRAM AUTO, the factory mode. Frame on the screen or in the viewfinder and press halfway: the green lamp lights up when focus and exposure are locked. Press all the way, then wait for the BUSY bar to go out before the next photo.

What it can do

  • A virtual dial with 7 modes, on the shooting mode button: PROGRAM AUTO, Portrait, Landscape + Portrait, Landscape, Night Scene, Self-portrait and Movie. In Night Scene, it slows the shutter and reduces noise by itself.
  • QuickTime Motion JPEG movies, without sound: a full press starts recording, a second one stops it. The flash and super close-up are off during filming.
  • A 2.8× optical zoom, i.e. 38 to 106 mm in 35 mm equivalent, and about 10× with the digital zoom, which can add grain.
  • A close-up mode from 20 to 50 cm at wide angle and from 50 to 90 cm at telephoto, and a super close-up at 2 cm from the subject in the CAMERA tab of the menu.
  • A burst of about 4 photos, at 1.1 frames per second, in HQ quality only. It also prints without a computer on a PictBridge printer via USB cable, or on an ImageLink printer through its dedicated connector.

The flash and the self-timer

  • The flash button cycles through four settings: automatic, red-eye reduction with pre-flashes, fill-in flash that fires with every photo, and flash off.
  • At half-press, the lightning bolt symbol stays lit when the flash is ready.
  • With the self-timer button, the self-timer lamp stays lit for about 10 seconds, blinks for 2 seconds with a beep, then the photo is taken. The self-timer cancels after each photo.

Good to know

  • The batteries run down even with the screen off, as long as the switch isn’t on OFF.
  • The battery indicator blinks red when they’re getting weak. BATTERY EMPTY means they need changing.
  • A card of a brand other than Olympus, or one formatted on a computer, should be formatted in the camera: MODE MENU, CARD, CARD SETUP. Formatting erases everything, even protected photos.
  • If the green lamp blinks at half-press, release the shutter button, reframe and try again. For a difficult subject, aim at an object at the same distance, hold the half-press and reframe.
  • PANORAMA mode only works with Olympus cards.
