Battery Slide the battery/card cover latch and open the cover. Slide in the EN-EL12 battery, terminals facing as shown on the label, pushing the orange latch with its edge until it clicks into place. To take it out, with the camera off, push this orange latch.
Charging The battery charges in the camera while it is off: connect it with the UC-E6 USB cable to the EH-68P charging AC adapter, plugged into a socket. The charge lamp blinks slowly in green, then goes out when it’s done. Allow about 4 hours for a flat battery, between 5 and 35 °C.
Card With the camera off, slide an SD or SDHC card into the same compartment until it clicks. With no card, it records to its internal memory of about 32 MB. A card that comes from another camera should be formatted in this one (setup menu, Format card).
Switching on for the first time Press the power switch: the green lamp lights up and the screen comes on. The first time you turn it on, choose the language with the rotary multi selector (French is available) and confirm with OK. Answer Yes to then set your time zone, daylight saving time, the date and the time.
Your first photo Press the shooting mode button and choose Auto mode. Press the shutter button halfway: the focus area turns green when the image is sharp, then press all the way down. In low light, the flash pops up by itself. Press it down gently to lower it when you’ve finished.
What it can do
HD 720p video (1280 × 720) with stereo sound, from any mode: one press of the movie-record button starts the clip, a second press stops it. 29 minutes at most per clip. A Class 6 card or faster is recommended.
During a clip, the optical zoom stays locked: only the digital zoom (up to 2×) works, and the flash doesn’t fire.
Macro mode focuses from about 1 cm, with the zoom at the wide-angle position.
Besides Auto mode: a Scene mode with a scene auto selector, a Smart portrait mode that takes the picture by itself at every smile, and a Subject tracking mode for anything that moves.
The flash
Range at auto sensitivity: 0.5 to 5.5 m at wide angle, 0.9 to 3.7 m at telephoto.
Five modes with the rotary multi selector: auto, auto with red-eye reduction, off, fill flash (it fires with every shot) and slow sync for night portraits.
Flash off or low light: put the camera on a tripod and then turn off vibration reduction in the setup menu.
Good to know
Vibration reduction is on from the factory, for photos as well as video. After turning the camera on, wait a few seconds for the image to settle on the screen.
After 1 minute without use (factory setting), the screen turns off and the lamp blinks. 3 minutes later, the camera turns off. The delay is set with Auto off, in the setup menu.
As long as it’s connected to the EH-68P adapter, it won’t turn on. The battery also charges when the camera is plugged into a computer, or outside the camera in the MH-65 charger sold separately.
In cold weather, the battery weakens: keep a spare one warm. If you aren’t using it, take it out of the camera and recharge it at least every six months.
Don’t open the cover while a photo or a clip is being recorded: you risk losing the data.
