Charging The EN-EL8 battery charges outside the camera, in the MH-62 charger: the CHARGE lamp blinks while it charges and stays lit when it’s done. Allow about two hours for a flat battery, between 5 and 35 °C.
Battery Open the battery/card cover. Slide the battery in the direction shown on the label, lifting the orange latch with its side, which drops back once it is in place. To take it out, turn the camera off and push this latch.
Card With the camera off, slide an SD card into the same compartment until it clicks. With no card, it records to its internal memory of about 38 MB. Format a card that comes from another camera in this camera.
Switching on for the first time Press the power switch: the green lamp lights up with the screen. The first time you turn it on, choose the language (French is available), accept setting the time, then set your time zone, daylight saving time, the date and the time.
Your first photo Press MODE, choose Auto mode with the rotary multi selector and confirm with OK. Press the shutter button halfway: the focus area turns green when the image is sharp. Press all the way down to take the picture.
What it can do
A Movie mode with sound: 640 × 480 at 30 frames per second, 10 minutes at most per movie. Set the optical zoom before you start recording. During recording, only the digital zoom (2× at most) works.
A High sensitivity mode raises the sensitivity by itself, up to ISO 2000, to limit blur in low light. Images may be slightly grainy.
The Portrait button switches to portrait mode: it detects up to five faces, focuses on the nearest one and sets the flash to red-eye reduction.
Vibration reduction (VR) is on by default to fight camera shake. Turn it off when the camera is on a tripod.
Macro mode focuses from 4 cm, with the zoom at an intermediate position.
Good to know
Left idle, the screen dims after 5 seconds and turns off after one minute (factory setting), then the camera turns itself off three minutes later. The power switch or the shutter button wakes it up.
In cold weather, the battery weakens: keep a spare battery warm. Don’t use it below 0 °C or above 40 °C.
The clock has its own small battery, charged by the main battery: after about 10 hours, it lasts several days. If it runs down, the settings go back to factory values.
Don’t open the cover while a photo is being recorded: you risk losing the data or damaging the card.
Don’t block the lens cover with a finger: the camera shows a lens cover error.
