Getting started

  1. Batteries Under the body, turn the battery cover clockwise, towards OPEN. Put in two 1.5 V batteries the right way round, then close it by turning the other way. LR6 alkalines are fine, but not rechargeable nickel-cadmium batteries.
  2. Loading In the shade, push the back release button down: the counter returns to S. Put the cartridge in, slide the end of the film leader into a slot in the take-up spool, work the lever so the perforations engage the sprockets, then close the back. Wind on and fire until the counter shows 1: the rewind crank should turn.
  3. Sensitivity With the lever under the lens, bring your film’s speed to the centre of the window at the top of the lens: ISO 100, 200 or 400 (ASA). The dots between two values aren’t used.
  4. Your first photo Frame your subject in the viewfinder’s bright frame, at least 1.5 m away: focus is fixed. Press the shutter button halfway: if the viewfinder lamp lights up, there isn’t enough light, so pop up the flash. Press all the way, then wind on with the lever for the next shot.
  5. Rewinding When the lever won’t wind on any more, the film has reached the end: don’t press the shutter button. Press the rewind button under the camera, unfold the crank and turn it in the direction of the arrow. When you no longer feel any resistance, open the back and take out the cartridge.

What it can do

  • Focus is fixed, set at 2.8 m. As the aperture is small, everything is sharp from 1.5 m to infinity, both a nearby subject and the landscape behind it.
  • A single shutter speed, 1/125 s. The aperture sets itself, from f/4 to f/16, according to the film speed and whether the flash is used. With ISO 100 film: f/8 without flash, f/4 with flash.
  • Up close, at 1.5 m, the actual field ends at the parallax marks, at the top and left of the bright frame.

The flash

  • Push the flash button in the direction of the arrow: the flash pops up and switches on. After a faint hum, its lamp lights up within a few seconds: you can take the picture.
  • Range: 2 to 5 m. For a subject at 1.5 or 2 m, keep the button pushed all the way in the direction of the arrow: that’s the close-subject correction.
  • If you fire before the lamp lights up, the flash doesn’t go off or the photo comes out dark.
  • In broad daylight too, it lights up a backlit subject or one near a window, at 1.5 or 2 m, or in overcast weather, at dawn or dusk, from 2 to 5 m without the correction.
  • After use, fold the flash down until it locks: it switches off.

Good to know

  • With fresh batteries, the flash lamp lights up within a few seconds. If it takes more than 30 s, replace both batteries with two new ones of the same type.
  • Stated battery life: about 120 flashes with manganese batteries, 250 with alkalines. Recharges in 9 s or 7 s.
  • In very cold weather, the batteries weaken and the flash takes longer to charge. Keep the camera under your coat or in a bag, and take it out for the photo.
  • Hold it with both hands, pressed against your forehead, elbows tucked in. For vertical shots, keep the flash at the top.
  • Don’t open the back before rewinding is finished: the shots you’ve taken would be lost.

Care

  • Body: no alcohol, thinner or solvent. A soft, dry cloth, very lightly moistened with detergent for a stubborn mark.
  • Lens and viewfinder: blow the dust off with a blower, then wipe gently with a soft cloth.
  • Don’t leave it in the sun in a car or on the beach: film, batteries and mechanism all suffer. If it has fallen in water, take it to a repairer.
  • Take the batteries out if you won’t be using it for a long time. Don’t take it apart: it contains a high-voltage circuit.
