Getting started
Battery Open the battery compartment cover and insert a 3 V CR123A or DL123A lithium battery. Close the cover.
Switching on Slide the switch under the lens: the lens comes out and its cover opens. With the cover closed, the shutter button stays locked. The red lamp by the eyepiece lights while the flash charges, and the shutter button waits until charging is finished.
Loading With the camera on, push the back catch and open the back. Insert the cartridge, pull the film leader to the arrow-shaped mark and close the back. Press the shutter button three times: the counter should show 1; if not, open the back again and reload the film.
Your first photo Put the subject in the focus frame, in the centre of the viewfinder, at least 1.2 m away. Press halfway until the green lamp lights, then press fully. The film advances one frame by itself.
End of the roll After the last frame, the film rewinds by itself and the motor stops. Don’t change the battery while it’s rewinding. When the counter is back on S, open the back and take out the cartridge.
What it can do
Focusing is automatic, by infrared, from 1.2 m to infinity. The viewfinder shows a bright frame, the focus frame in the centre and parallax marks for close subjects.
Focus lock: aim the centre frame at the subject, press halfway until the green lamp lights, keep your finger down, reframe, then press fully. If you let go, the focus is cancelled.
Through a window, hold the camera flat against the glass, lock the focus, then frame.
Exposure is automatic, with an electronic shutter at 2 s and from 1/4 to 1/500 s. With DX-coded film, the film speed sets itself to ISO 100, 200 or 400. Without a DX code, the camera assumes ISO 100.
Self-timer: hold down the top button on the front and press the shutter button. The lamp lights for about 7 s, blinks for 3 s, and the photo is taken after about 10 s. To cancel it, close the lens cover.
The flash
When the light is low, the red and green lamps light together: the flash will fire by itself. After the flash, the red lamp stays lit for a few seconds while it recharges, and the shutter button stays locked.
Range: 1.2 to 3.4 m with ISO 100 or 200 film, 1.2 to 6.8 m with ISO 400. Recharges in about 4 s.
Fill flash: hold down the bottom button (Flash ON) as you press the shutter button. The flash fires even in bright light, which helps against the light, in deep shadows or on overcast days.
Without flash: hold down the middle button (Flash OFF) as you press the shutter button. Exposure stays automatic down to 1/4 s at ISO 100, 1/15 s at ISO 400. When it’s very dark, the exposure lasts 2 s at ISO 100, 1/2 s at ISO 400: put the camera on a tripod.
With the self-timer, hold Flash ON or Flash OFF down together with the self-timer button to force or cancel the flash.
Good to know
Change the battery when the flash takes more than 8 s to recharge. Stated battery life: about 20 rolls of 24 exposures, with flash on half the photos.
Hold it with both hands, elbows tucked in, without covering the lens, the light meter cell or the autofocus windows with a finger or the strap. For vertical shots, keep the flash at the top.
The Auto-date version prints the date or time on the photo. Its calendar is programmed up to 31 December 2019, and the date back has its own battery, a CR2025.
Care
Clean it with a dry cloth, never with alcohol or thinner.
Don’t leave it in the sun in a car, protect it from rain and keep it between -10 °C and 50 °C.
Keep it away from formalin and mothballs.
Don’t take it apart, and never throw the battery into a fire.
