Getting started

  1. Batteries Slide the battery cover in the direction of the arrow and open it. Insert 4 new AA batteries of the same type (alkaline, Ni-MH or Ni-Cd), with the polarity as shown in the diagram, then close it. Never use lithium or manganese batteries: their heat can damage the camera.
  2. Card With the camera off, open the card cover in the direction of the arrow. Push the 3.3 V SmartMedia card in straight, all the way, until it locks, then close the cover. The wrong way round, it won’t go all the way in: don’t force it.
  3. Switching on Slide the lens cover to the side until it locks. Turn the Mode switch from OFF to the photo position: the green viewfinder lamp lights up and the lens extends. If the screen shows LENS COVER, the cover isn’t open far enough.
  4. Date and time Press MENU/EXE, choose MODE then SET-UP with the arrow buttons and confirm. Under DATE/TIME, set the year, month, day, hour, minute and the date order (DATE TYPE), then press MENU/EXE. The menus are in English: SET-UP has no language setting.
  5. Your first photo Press DISP to turn on the screen, or look through the viewfinder, with the subject in the AF frame. Press halfway: it’s in focus when the viewfinder lamp turns steady green or STANDBY appears. Press all the way: a beep, then the lamp turns orange while the image is recorded.

What it can do

  • A macro mode from 10 to 80 cm: MENU/EXE, then MACRO set to ON. The lens goes to wide angle and the optical zoom is locked. Frame on the screen: the viewfinder doesn’t show the right field of view. It is cancelled when you switch off.
  • A Manual mode (MENU/EXE, MODE, MANUAL): exposure compensation in 9 steps, from -0.9 to +1.5 EV, and white balance on Auto or set for six types of lighting (sun, shade, three kinds of fluorescent tube, incandescent lamp).
  • In Manual mode, the photo is shown after you take it: MENU/EXE saves it, CANCEL/BACK discards it. The settings stay in memory when you switch off.
  • A 2× digital zoom takes over at the end of the optical zoom, at 640 × 480 only and with the screen on.
  • A 10-second self-timer (MENU/EXE, TIMER set to ON), not available in Manual mode: the lamp stays lit for 5 seconds, then blinks for 5 seconds.

The flash

  • The flash button cycles through five modes: Auto (no icon), red-eye reduction, forced flash, flash off and slow sync for night scenes.
  • Range: 0.2 to 3.5 m at wide angle, 0.8 to 3.5 m at telephoto. In macro with the flash, stay at least 20 cm from the subject.
  • The viewfinder lamp blinks orange while the flash charges: wait for it to stop before pressing the shutter button.
  • In low light without flash, or with slow sync, use a tripod to avoid camera shake.

Good to know

  • In normal mode, it can’t focus at 80 cm or closer: switch to Macro. If it’s too dark to focus, step back to at least 1.5 m.
  • The viewfinder shows 80% of the image and, between 0.8 and 1.5 m, the photo only captures part of what you see in it: for precise framing, use the screen.
  • Steady orange lamp: it’s recording. Don’t switch off, and don’t open the battery cover or the card cover.
  • It switches itself off after 2 minutes without use. To turn it back on, move the switch back to OFF, then to photo or playback.
  • Change the batteries with the camera off and in under 5 minutes: any longer and it may go back to its factory settings and lose the date.

Care

  • Below 10 °C, batteries weaken, especially alkalines: keep them warm in a pocket before putting them in.
  • Don’t leave Ni-MH or Ni-Cd batteries in it for long: it draws a little current even when off and can drain them to the point of making them unusable. For long storage, remove the batteries and the card.
  • It doesn’t like sand, which can damage it for good: protect it at the beach.
  • Lens and screen: blower brush, then a dry, lint-free cloth. Never use solvent or benzine on the body.
