Olympus FE-4040: original creative filters, without going through an app
In the jungle of 2000s and 2010s “digicams”, there are the serious cameras… and there are the funones. The Olympus FE-4040 clearly belongs to the second group.
Creative filters built in · Sensor CCD · Finish Crystal Shell

More than a camera, a creative tool
At Analoggwerz, we love this model for one simple reason: it has an incredible personality. Often overshadowed by the (much pricier) “Mju” series, the FE series (“Friendly & Easy”) is a goldmine for anyone after the vintage look at an affordable price.
Why is the Olympus FE-4040 one of our current favourites? Here's what you need to know before you give in.

“Magic Filters”: the Instagram look before Instagram
It's THE feature that sets the FE-4040 apart from its competitors. Olympus built artistic filters (Magic Filters) right into the camera, transforming your photos instantly.
No editing app needed, it all happens when you press the shutter:
- Pop Art: For ultra-saturated, vibrant colours (perfect for street style).
- Pin Hole: Adds dark vignetting and a mysterious retro tint.
- Fisheye: For that 90s “skate video” look we love.
- Sketch: Turns your scenes into sketches (very original for portraits).
If you want to post your photos straight after transferring them to your phone, the FE-4040 is the king of creative efficiency.

The science of Olympus colour
Ask any photographer: Olympus has a “thing” with colour. People often call it “Olympus Blue”. Even without the magic filters on, the FE-4040's 14-megapixel sensor delivers JPEGs with character.
- Skies are deep.
- Skin tones are flattering, slightly rosy, far from the sometimes greyish look of today's smartphones.
- The built-in flash is perfectly judged to give that “impromptu party” look without completely blowing out faces.

Design: the “Crystal Shell” that shines
Looks matter. When you bring a digicam out at a party or on a trip, you want it to look good. The Olympus FE-4040 has a “Double-Layered Crystal Shell” finish. What does that mean in practice? It has a clear, glossy layer over the colour, which gives it a very premium, scratch-resistant look.
It's slim, light, and its 26mm wide angle lets you fit your whole group of mates in the frame, even at arm's length for a vintage selfie.

Key takeaways
What we like
- Filters applied at capture: the effect is in the file, not added afterwards
- Olympus colour science, recognisable on skin and skies
- A light body you take along without a second thought
Good to know before you buy
- Filters are permanent on the photo: best to take an unfiltered shot as well
- Like all CCD compacts, it doesn't like low light
- The screen doesn't do the files justice: judge them on a computer
Getting the most out of it
- Take every shot twice: one with the filter, one without. You’ll still have the choice when you sort them.
- Shoot in bright, direct light: that’s where these sensors give their best results.
- A soft case is enough to keep the glossy finish safe from scratches in your bag.
Frequently asked questions about the Olympus FE-4040
Are the filters applied before or after the photo?
When you take the shot: the effect is recorded in the file. That’s the whole difference from an app filter, and it’s also why it’s worth taking each shot twice if you’re unsure.
Why choose this compact over a phone?
For the look of the CCD sensor and for the experience: a camera that does just one thing, with no notifications. Technically, a recent phone will do better in the dark. That’s not what we’re asking of it.
Which memory card should I use?
A modest-capacity card suited to its generation. The expected format is stated on the product page. See our SD cards.
What condition are your cameras in?
Every item is tested and checked in the workshop, then photographed without retouching. Full details of our condition grades are on the page Conditions and guarantees.
