Getting started
- Charging The NP-BG1 battery is charged outside the camera, in the BC-CSGB or BC-CSGC charger: insert it and plug in the charger, the CHARGE lamp lights up. It goes out after about 270 minutes (normal charge). Allow 330 minutes for a full charge, ideally between 10 and 30 °C.
- Battery Open the battery/card compartment cover. Slide the battery in, pushing the eject lever aside with its end. To take it out, slide this lever, taking care not to drop the battery.
- Card It takes Memory Stick Duo, PRO Duo and PRO-HG Duo: slide the card in, terminals towards the lens, until it clicks. Without a card, it records to its internal memory of about 15 MB. A card formatted on a computer isn’t guaranteed to work: format it in the camera, which erases everything.
- Switching on for the first time Press POWER: the first time you switch on, the Clock Settings screen appears. Choose the date order, set each value with the control button, then confirm with OK. The language is changed in Settings, on the Language Setting line.
- Your first photo Set the mode dial to Auto Adjustment and hold the camera with your elbows against your body. Press halfway: the green indicator blinks, a beep sounds, then it stays lit. Then press all the way.
What it can do
- An optical viewfinder as well as the screen. Turn off the screen with the DISP button: the battery then lasts about 520 shots instead of 420. Up close, the viewfinder doesn’t show exactly the recorded frame: check on the screen.
- A Movie mode on the dial, with sound (mono microphone): 640 × 480 at about 30 frames per second (640 Fine, on Memory Stick PRO Duo only) or at 17 (640 Standard), and 320 × 240 at 8. Press all the way to start, and again to stop. One clip lasts 10 minutes at most.
- The dial’s Smile Shutter mode fires by itself when your subject smiles, up to six images. Press all the way to put it on standby, and again to exit.
- The dial’s ISO mode (High Sensitivity) takes photos without flash in low light. In P mode, you choose from ISO 100 to 3200 yourself (ISO 100 to 400 in burst).
- EASY mode enlarges the text on the screen and leaves only three settings: image size (Large or Small), flash (Auto or Off), self-timer (10 s or Off).
Good to know
- The W110 doesn’t have the SteadyShot anti-blur of the W120, W125 and W130. To avoid camera shake, the manual suggests a tripod, the 2-second self-timer or a higher ISO sensitivity.
- After about three minutes without use, it switches itself off to save the battery. Just switch it back on.
- A small internal battery keeps the date and time. Left unused for about a month, the camera will have drained it: put in a charged battery and leave it switched off for at least 24 hours.
- In cold weather, the battery weakens: keep it in a pocket, close to your body, and put it in just before taking photos. The flash and the zoom drain it quickly.
- Don’t switch off or remove the battery or the card while the access lamp is lit: you could damage your images. It can’t imprint the date on photos.
