Getting started

Battery Open the cover and slide in the NP-BN1 battery along the guide arrow, until the eject lever locks it. Closing the cover with the battery wrongly inserted can damage the camera.
Charging It charges outside the camera, in the BC-CSN charger: about 185 min until the CHARGE lamp goes out, 245 min for a full charge. The charger accepts 100 to 240 V.
Card Insert the card the right way round, notched corner first, until it clicks. It takes Memory Stick Duo, SD and SDHC (Class 2 or higher for video). Without a card, it keeps about 6 MB in internal memory.
Switching on for the first time Press ON/OFF, set the date format then the date with the control button, and confirm with [OK]. To change the language: MENU, Settings, Main Settings, Language Setting.
Your first photo Set the mode switch to Still Image. T zooms in, W zooms out. Press halfway: a beep and a lamp confirm focus. Then press fully.

Intelligent Auto Adjustment: it recognises twilight, backlight, landscape, macro or portrait on its own, and sets up the shot to match.
Easy Mode: fewer functions, bigger text on the screen. To exit: MENU, Exit Easy Mode.
SteadyShot on Auto turns on anti-blur when camera shake is likely. It doesn't work in Movie Mode or with the flash.
For video, 640 × 480 at best, about 30 frames per second. A file stops at around 2 GB.

Screen: an LCD cleaning kit. Lens: a soft cloth.
Body: a barely damp soft cloth, then a dry cloth. No thinner, alcohol, sun cream or insect repellent.
Keep it away from sand, dust, a car parked in the sun and the back pocket of your trousers.
