Getting started

Battery It takes the BP70A lithium-ion battery. Slide it in with the Samsung logo facing down. To take it out, release the latch that holds it.
Charging Plug the USB cable into the mains adapter, then into the camera while it's off: about 150 minutes. Red lamp while charging, green when done, orange if there's an error. On a computer, it takes longer.
Card No card, no photos. It needs a microSD (2 GB guaranteed) or a microSDHC (8 GB guaranteed), chip facing up. Format it in the camera before use.
Switching on for the first time The first time you switch on, the setup screen asks for the language (Language), the time zone with daylight saving time, the date and time, then the date format.
Your first photo Choose Smart Auto: it recognises the scene and shows it at the top left. Press halfway, the frame should turn green, then press fully. Red frame: reframe and try again.

DIS mode reduces camera shake blur by digital processing. No digital zoom in this mode, and a fast-moving subject stays blurred.
In Movie mode, the shutter button starts then stops recording. The Movie menu offers stabilisation and a Zoom Mute option that cuts the sound while you zoom.
A card formatted on a computer or another camera may not be readable: format it in the camera.
With Power Save switched on, it goes to sleep after 30 seconds of inactivity.
