Getting started

  1. Batteries Slide the battery cover in the direction of the arrow and insert two 1.5 V AA batteries following the polarity marks in the compartment. Push the cover back until it clicks. No nickel-cadmium (NiCd) batteries: one battery in the wrong way, and the camera won’t work.
  2. Loading Push the back latch down to open it. Put the cartridge in its chamber and pull the film leader to the mark, with the film flat between the guides, then close the back. The film advances by itself to frame 1, with the lens open or closed. If the counter doesn’t move, open up and reload.
  3. Sensitivity Nothing to set: it’s made for DX-coded film from ISO 100 to 400. It reads the black and silver squares on the cartridge and sets the film speed by itself.
  4. Your first photo Slide the lens cover switch to uncover the lens: it only fires with the cover fully open. Put your subject in the central frame of the viewfinder, at least 0.8 m away, press halfway to focus, then all the way. The film advances by itself.
  5. Rewinding At the end of the roll, it rewinds by itself. When “S” shows in the counter window, the film is fully back in its cartridge. To stop before the end, press the rewind button mid-roll, with the lens open or closed.

What it can do

  • Focus is automatic, from 0.8 m to infinity, with focus lock. Off-centre subject: aim at it, press halfway and keep your finger down, reframe, then press all the way. Letting go of the shutter button cancels the lock.
  • A self-timer: put the camera on a tripod or a steady surface, frame, then press its button. The lamp blinks slowly, then quickly, then stays lit just before the shutter fires, after 10 s. Close the cover or press the button again to cancel it.
  • Exposure is automatic: the shutter picks its own speed, from 1/60 to 1/200 s.

The flash

  • It fires by itself when there isn’t enough light. The flash-ready lamp lights up once it’s charged, in about 6 s. While it’s charging, the shutter button stays locked.
  • Red-eye reduction switches on by itself for flash portraits. Press halfway and keep your finger there for at least a second: the front lamp lights up, for 10 s at most.
  • If the flash takes more than 10 s to charge, change the batteries.

Good to know

  • Red battery lamp blinking: you can still finish at least one 36-exposure roll, then change the batteries. Lamp steady: everything stops, change them straight away.
  • Hold it with both hands, flash at the top if you hold it vertically, with no fingers over the lens or the flash. Don’t cover the autofocus windows on the front: the focus would be wrong.
  • The film check window shows whether there’s a cartridge in the camera. The counter goes back to “S” when you open the back.
  • It switches itself off after 3 minutes.

Care

  • It isn’t waterproof: protect it from rain, splashes and sea spray. If it gets wet, wipe it straight away and have it checked.
  • Avoid knocks, extreme temperatures and humidity, dust and sand. Wipe the autofocus windows with a soft cloth.
  • A tripod screw that’s too long can pierce the body: check it before mounting the camera.
  • Take the batteries out if you won’t be using it for a long time. Don’t take it apart: its circuit carries high voltage.
