Getting started

  1. Battery Slide the release lever, open the cover and push in the DMW-BCG10E battery until the lever locks it. The camera rejects batteries it doesn’t recognise as safe.
  2. Charging It charges in the DE-A66A charger, indoors, between 10 and 35°C. The green CHARGE light goes off when it’s done, after about 130 minutes. The battery isn’t charged when you buy it.
  3. Card Push the card in until it clicks: SD from 8 MB to 2 GB or SDHC from 4 to 32 GB. Format it in the camera, never on a computer. With no card, it records to its 40 MB of internal memory.
  4. Switching on for the first time Switch on: “PLEASE SET THE CLOCK” appears. Press MENU/SET, set the date, time and display format, confirm. Switch off, then back on in recording mode to check.
  5. Your first photo Set the REC/PLAY switch to recording and the dial to Intelligent Auto. Press halfway: the green indicator lights up. Press all the way down. It sets the scene, stabiliser and ISO on its own.

What it can do

  • 8× optical zoom, up to 15.6× with the extended optical zoom (EZ) at a reduced image size.
  • Video up to 1280 × 720 at 30 frames per second, with sound, on a card only. Depending on the quality, a single continuous clip stops at 15 minutes or 2 GB. The screen shows the time remaining.
  • High-speed burst up to 10 frames per second, at a reduced image size.
  • In Intelligent Auto, it focuses from 3 cm at wide angle.

Good to know

  • For HD video, Panasonic recommends a fast card marked “10MB/s” or higher.
  • Leave a charged battery in the camera for 24 hours: the clock battery then keeps the time for 3 months without the main battery.
  • Avoid repeatedly recharging a battery that’s already full: it can swell.
  • In movie mode, the stabiliser stays on MODE1.
