The PDF opens directly, hosted by Panasonic.

Getting started

  1. Batteries It runs on 2 AA batteries: Oxyride, alkaline or rechargeable Ni-MH. Slide the cover open and match the polarity. Never manganese, lithium, nickel or Ni-Cd batteries.
  2. Charging Oxyride batteries can’t be recharged. To recharge, use Ni-MH batteries and a battery charger: the manual refers you to the charger’s instructions. Recharge them once they’re flat, because of the “memory effect”.
  3. Card Open the card cover and slide in an SD (8 MB to 2 GB) or SDHC (4 GB) card, label facing the back, until it clicks. With no card, it records to its 27 MB of built-in memory.
  4. Switching on for the first time The first time you switch it on, “PLEASE SET THE CLOCK” appears. Press MENU/SET, set the date and time, confirm. Then set the battery type in the SETUP menu, BATTERY TYPE.
  5. Your first photo In normal picture mode, press halfway: two beeps, the green indicator lights up and the AF area turns green. Press all the way down. It focuses from 50 cm. Any closer, switch to macro (5 cm at wide angle).

It all comes down to the batteries

  • Battery life to the CIPA standard: 260 shots with Oxyride, 160 with alkaline, 470 with charged Ni-MH.
  • At 0°C, alkalines drop to about 45 shots, while Ni-MH last 390 shots.
  • In cold weather, warm the batteries in your pocket before use, with no metal objects next to them.
  • Always change both batteries together, for 2 new batteries of the same type. If you won’t be using it for a long time, take them out.
  • Clean the terminals with a soft, dry cloth: grease greatly shortens battery life.

What it can do

  • 3× optical zoom, up to 4.1× with the extra optical zoom, at a reduced image size.
  • Optical stabiliser: MODE1 works continuously, MODE2 when you press the shutter button, which is more effective.
  • Video up to 848 × 480 on a card, at 30 or 10 frames per second, without sound. In the built-in memory, 320 × 240 only.
  • Simple mode for beginners: only the basic functions appear in the menu.
