Getting started
Batteries Close the lens cover, lift the battery compartment lid in the direction of the arrow and open it. Fit two 1.5 V AA alkaline batteries (LR6) following the plus and minus signs. No Ni-Cd or lithium batteries, and don’t mix new batteries with used ones.
Loading Push the back release button upwards and open the back. Put in the cartridge, line up the film leader with the film tip mark without letting it overlap the guide, then close the back. Open the lens cover until it clicks and press the shutter button until you see “1” on the counter.
Sensitivity It reads the DX code on the cartridge and sets itself to ISO 100, 200 or 400. Film without a DX code is always treated as ISO 100: in that case, use ISO 100 film.
Your first photo Open the lens cover until it clicks: the lens moves to wide angle. Frame in the viewfinder with the zoom button, with the subject in the autofocus area. Press halfway, the green lamp lights up, then press all the way.
Rewinding At the end of the roll, the shutter button locks. Slide and lock the rewind switch: the motor rewinds. When the noise stops and the counter shows “S”, open the back and take out the cartridge.
What it can do
A 38-70 mm zoom: T button for telephoto at 70 mm, W button to go back to wide angle at 38 mm.
Autofocus from 1 m to infinity, locked when you press halfway. If the subject is closer than 1 m, the green lamp blinks.
A 12-second self-timer: hold down the self-timer button and press the shutter button all the way. Press the button again or close the lens cover to cancel it. Stand behind the camera when you press the shutter button.
A mode lever, on the front, to turn the flash off or switch to landscape mode.
Motorised rewinding, possible at any point in the roll.
The flash
It fires by itself when there isn’t enough light, and the red lamp lights up. Just before the photo, a lamp lights up to reduce red-eye.
Range with ISO 100 film: 1 to 3.4 m at wide angle, 1 to 2 m at telephoto. With ISO 400: 1 to 6.8 m and 1 to 4 m.
While charging, the red lamp blinks and the flash doesn’t fire. If charging takes more than 15 seconds, change the batteries.
Good to know
With flat batteries, the shutter button stops working. Take spare batteries when travelling or in cold weather, and remove them if the camera goes unused for a long time.
If the counter doesn’t move to “1” after loading, open the back again and reload the film.
You can rewind before the end with the same switch. You’ll sometimes get more shots than expected, but the last ones won’t always be printable.
The manual also covers the Quartz Date version: date mode buttons on the back and an extra CR2025 lithium battery. It doesn’t explain how to set the date.
Care
Don’t take it apart, don’t get it wet, don’t drop it.
To clean it, no thinners, benzine or solvent.
Avoid heat above 40 °C, a car in midsummer for example, and cold below 0 °C.
Don’t force the zoom.
