Getting started

  1. Battery It runs on one 3 V CR123A or DL123A lithium battery. Open the cover with a coin in the slot, insert the battery the right way round, and close it until it clicks.
  2. Battery level Nothing to charge: you replace the battery. An indicator on the LCD panel shows its status. Expect about 17 rolls of 24 exposures, with flash on half the shots. Keep a spare battery when travelling.
  3. Film Slide the back cover latch down, drop in the cartridge, pull the leader to the mark, keeping it flat, then close. Use DX-coded film. Canon recommends ISO 400.
  4. Switching on for the first time Turn the selector to any mode except OFF: the lens extends to 38 mm and the film advances to frame 1. If “0” blinks on the counter, reload the film.
  5. Your first photo Selector on AUTO, frame with the zoom lever and put the AF frame on the subject. Press lightly: the green lamp lights up. Then press all the way. In low light, the flash fires by itself.

The mode selector

  • It also acts as the power switch: OFF, auto with red-eye reduction, auto, flash on, flash off and self-timer.
  • With red-eye reduction, the lamp lights up and the shutter waits about 1 second: don’t move.
  • The self-timer fires after 10 seconds.
  • Flash range with ISO 100 colour negative film: 0.6 to 4 m at wide angle, 0.6 to 2.7 m at telephoto. With ISO 400, up to 8 m and 5.4 m.

Good to know

  • Film without a DX code is read as ISO 25.
  • At the end of the roll, it rewinds by itself. To stop earlier, press the rewind button.
  • Closer than 1 m, frame below the parallax correction marks in the viewfinder: anything above them won’t be in the photo.
  • It isn’t waterproof: after the beach, wipe it with a dry cloth, and keep any liquid off the lens.
  • Set it to OFF after use: the lens retracts into the body.
