Getting started

Battery Slide the LI-50B lithium-ion battery into its compartment the right way round: put in the wrong way, the camera won’t switch on. To take it out, push the lock button in the direction of the arrow.
Charging It charges outside the camera, in the LI-50C charger: the light is on while charging and goes off when it’s done. Allow about 2 hours. This charger only takes the LI-50B.
Card It takes xD-Picture Cards from 16 MB to 2 GB: push the card in straight until it locks. With no card, photos go to the internal memory. Format a card from another brand, or one that’s been through a computer, in the camera.
Switching on for the first time Turn the mode dial to the auto position and press the power button. It asks for the date and time: set them with the arrow buttons, then confirm with OK. You choose the language in the Setup menu.
Your first photo Frame, then press the shutter button halfway: the focus mark turns green. If it blinks red, try again. Then press all the way down.

The mode dial offers auto, program (the camera sets the aperture and shutter speed), scenes, the framing guide, movie and playback.
The framing guide shows four previews of the same effect, for example four exposure levels: you pick the frame and it takes the photo with that setting.
In AF MODE, FACE DETECT looks for a face in the picture and focuses on it.
In super macro, it focuses from 2 cm, at wide angle only. In-camera panorama stitching needs an Olympus xD card.

It films at 640 × 480 or 320 × 240, at 30 or 15 frames per second, with sound.
At 640 × 480 and 30 frames per second, the manual gives only 10 s of continuous recording on a 1 GB card. At 15 frames per second, 18 min 37 s.
Digital stabilisation is off by default for movies. If you turn it on, the image is slightly enlarged.

It keeps its settings when switched off. To go back to the factory settings, run RESET in the shooting menu.
To save the battery, avoid repeated half-presses and constant zooming, and turn on power saving.
Clean it with a soft cloth, with no alcohol or benzine. After the beach, wipe it with a cloth dipped in fresh water and well wrung out.
To store it for a long time, take out the battery and card, keep it somewhere cool and dry, and put the battery back in now and then to test it.
