Getting started

  1. Battery Line up the top of the BN-VG108E battery with the mark and slide it in until it clicks softly. To remove it, slide the release lever. JVC recommends its own batteries.
  2. Charging With the battery fitted, plug in the AC-V10E AC adapter: the lamp blinks while charging and goes out when it’s done, after about 2 h 20 min. The battery doesn’t come charged.
  3. Card With the screen closed, open the cover and slide the card in, label facing outwards: SDHC (4 to 32 GB) or SDXC (up to 64 GB), class 4 or higher. A card used in another device should be formatted first.
  4. Switching on for the first time Opening the screen turns it on, closing it turns it off. Answer YES to “SET DATE/TIME!”, set the date and time with UP and DOWN, confirm with OK, then choose your region.
  5. First video Open the lens cover, then the screen. Check that the mode is Intelligent Auto (i.AUTO button), then press START/STOP to record. Press again to stop.

What it can do

  • Full HD 1920 × 1080 video in AVCHD format, in four quality settings: UXP, XP, SP and EP.
  • 40× optical zoom, dynamic zoom up to 70×.
  • Intelligent Auto mode: it recognises 12 types of scene and sets exposure and focus by itself.
  • Time-lapse recording: one frame every 1 to 80 seconds, to watch a long scene in a few seconds.
  • Digital image stabiliser: ON, or ON (AIS), more effective at wide angle.

Recording times to plan for

  • With the standard battery: 40 min of actual recording, 1 h 05 min continuous. JVC advises allowing three times the time you need.
  • On a 16 GB card: 1 h 20 min in UXP, 2 h in XP, 2 h 50 min in SP.
  • For UXP quality, use a class 6 card or higher.
  • It can record on mains power, but doesn’t charge the battery while recording or playing back.
  • On a tripod, with a subject that barely moves, turn the stabiliser off.
